This Privacy Policy describes how Skategrounds, Inc. ("Skategrounds," "we," "us," or "our") collects, uses, and shares information when you use the Skategrounds mobile app (iOS and Android) and related websites (collectively, the "Service").
If you have questions about this policy, contact us at [email protected].
1. Age Requirements
You must be at least 13 years old to create a Skategrounds account. If you live in the European Economic Area (EEA), the United Kingdom, or another jurisdiction that requires a higher age of consent for online services, you must meet the age required in your country of residence.
We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone below these ages. If we learn that we have collected information from a user who does not meet the age requirement, we will delete that account and the associated data. If you believe a child has signed up for Skategrounds, please email us at [email protected].
2. Information We Collect
We collect the following categories of information:
Account & Authentication
When you sign up, we collect the information needed to create and secure your account through our authentication provider. This includes your email address, the sign-in providers you use (e.g., Apple, Google, email/password), and a unique user ID.
Profile Information
You provide a skatertag (username) and your date of birth. We use your date of birth to enforce our age gates. We do not display your date of birth to other users.
Location & GPS Routes
When you record a session, we collect GPS data from your device. If you choose to keep recording while your phone is locked, we will collect background location data until you stop the session. GPS routes are stored as encrypted blobs in our cloud storage — see Section 7 for details on key custody.
Precise geolocation is treated as Sensitive Personal Information under California law. See Section 9 for your right to limit how we use it.
Device Motion Data
We collect device motion data used for activity tracking:
- Free users: phone accelerometer and gyroscope readings, used by on-device machine learning to detect when you are riding.
- Sensor users: motion data from the Skategrounds Bluetooth wearable, used to detect tricks and combos.
Trick and riding detection runs on your device. The motion-data window associated with each detected or corrected trick is uploaded to our servers so that we can review and improve trick detection over time. Riding-detection sensor data for free users is processed on-device and is not uploaded.
Trick Corrections in Game of Skate
If you use the wearable sensor and play Game of Skate, you can optionally correct the trick or land/miss outcome detected by our system. When you submit a correction, the corrected label and the associated motion-data window are stored on our servers and used to retrain and improve the trick-detection model.
Game of Skate Match Data
When you play a Game of Skate match, the following is shared with your opponent and stored on our servers for the duration and history of the match: your skatertag, the trick name detected (or corrected), the land/miss outcome, and replay metadata. Your opponent can see this data; brand partners and other third parties cannot.
Bluetooth Pairing
If you use the wearable sensor, we collect device identifiers (such as the sensor's hardware ID) to maintain the Bluetooth pairing between the sensor and your phone.
Purchases
If you purchase a subscription or in-app item, Apple (App Store) or Google (Play Store) processes the payment and provides us with a receipt confirming the purchase. We do not collect or store your credit card or payment details.
Push Notification Tokens
If you enable notifications, we receive a token from Apple Push Notification service (APNs) or the platform's push notification service so we can send you challenge reminders and other notifications you've opted into.
Usage & Diagnostic Data
We use a third-party analytics service to understand how the Service is used and to fix bugs. This includes screen views, in-app events (e.g., session started, trick detected), device model, OS version, app version, IP address, and the iOS Identifier for Vendor (IDFV) or Android Advertising ID (AAID) for crash and event correlation.
We have specifically configured our analytics so that:
- It is never used for advertising or ad personalization.
- Cross-device ad-tracking features are disabled.
- We do not sell this data and we do not share it with third parties for cross-context behavioral advertising.
Crash & Diagnostic Logs
If you choose to submit a bug report from inside the app, we collect diagnostic logs and basic device information (OS version, device model, app version) to help us reproduce and fix the issue. These logs are stored in encrypted cloud storage and are only used to diagnose the reported problem.
3. How We Use Information
We use the information we collect to:
- Operate the Service — record sessions, track stats, run leaderboards, deliver challenges, manage in-app purchases and subscriptions.
- Improve the app and the accuracy of our trick and riding detection models, including by retraining on user-corrected trick motion data.
- Provide customer support when you reach out or submit a bug report.
- Send notifications you've opted into.
- Detect and prevent abuse, fraud, and violations of our terms.
4. Legal Bases for Processing (EEA / UK Users)
If you are in the EEA or UK, we rely on the following legal bases under the GDPR / UK GDPR:
- Performance of a contract — to provide the Service you signed up for.
- Legitimate interests — to improve the Service (including model retraining on user-corrected tricks), prevent abuse, and operate the business, where those interests are not overridden by your rights.
- Consent — for optional features such as background location and push notifications.
- Legal obligation — where we are required by law to retain or disclose data.
5. Public Visibility & Leaderboards
Your skatertag and session statistics are displayed on public spot leaderboards when you skate at mapped locations. You can opt out of being shown on location leaderboards under Settings → Privacy at any time.
Game of Skate
When you play a Game of Skate match, your opponent can see your skatertag, the tricks you attempt and their land/miss outcomes, and the replay information for those tricks. Match history (including the trick exchanges) is retained as long as either player's account is active. Deleting your account removes your side of the match record; your opponent's record is retained from their perspective.
6. How We Share Information
We share information only as described below.
Service Providers (Processors)
We use the following categories of providers to run the Service. They process data on our behalf, only for the purposes we direct, and are bound by data processing agreements:
- Cloud infrastructure & database — hosts our backend services and stores account, session, trick, and gameplay data.
- Authentication — manages account sign-in and session tokens.
- Analytics — usage and crash analytics, configured with ad personalization and cross-device ad-tracking features disabled (as described in Section 2).
- Push notifications — delivers the notifications you've opted into.
- Encrypted object storage — stores encrypted GPS route blobs and submitted crash logs.
Other Recipients
- Apple — when you make a purchase through the App Store or receive push notifications, Apple acts as an independent controller of the data you provide to it. See Apple's Privacy Policy.
- Google (Play Billing) — when you make a purchase through the Play Store, Google acts as an independent controller of payment information.
Brand Partners — Aggregated, De-identified Analytics Only
Skategrounds features real-world skate brand likenesses (decks, trucks, wheels, and other parts) for use as in-game cosmetic items. To support these brand relationships, we share aggregated, de-identified analytics with brand partners on a quarterly basis. This may include:
- How often items featuring the brand are equipped across our user base.
- Aggregate miles ridden and tricks landed across users equipped with the brand's items.
- Average replacement/swap velocity for items.
- Aggregate demographic and regional breakdowns (e.g., country, age range).
What we do NOT share with brand partners: your username, account ID, email, date of birth, precise location, GPS routes, individual session data, or any information that identifies you personally.
Re-identification safeguards. Aggregated data is the result of cohorts of at least 100 users — segments smaller than that are suppressed. We do not attempt to re-identify any de-identified information we share. Brand partners are contractually prohibited from attempting to re-identify users, from combining the analytics with other datasets to do so, and from following or targeting individual users based on the analytics.
Legal & Safety
We may disclose information if required to do so by law, valid legal process, or to protect the rights, safety, or property of Skategrounds, our users, or the public.
Business Transfers
If Skategrounds is involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction. We will notify you before any transfer that would change how your information is handled.
What We Do NOT Do
We do not sell or share your personal information, and we do not use it for advertising.
7. Storage & Security
GPS route storage. Before being uploaded, GPS route blobs are encrypted on your device using a key managed by Skategrounds. Our storage provider cannot read the raw route contents. Skategrounds itself can decrypt routes server-side.
Other data. Data we store on our servers is encrypted in transit and at rest. Crash logs you submit are stored in a separate encrypted bucket and are only accessible to authorized Skategrounds personnel.
If we experience a data breach that affects your information, we will notify you in accordance with applicable law — and within 72 hours where required by GDPR.
8. Data Retention
- Account data is retained while your account is active.
- Session and route data is retained while your account is active.
- Offline session data is buffered locally on your device for up to one week if you skate without an internet connection, then syncs when you reconnect.
- Crash logs are deleted within 90 days of report resolution.
- Push notification tokens are deleted when your device signals an uninstall, when Apple/Google reports the token as invalid, or after 180 days of inactivity, whichever is sooner.
- Account deletion — when you delete your account, we delete or anonymize associated personal information within 30 days, except where we are required by law to retain it. Encrypted backups rotate within 90 days, after which the deleted data is no longer recoverable from backups.
9. Your Rights & Choices
You have the following rights:
- Right to access / data export — request a copy of the personal information we hold about you.
- Right to correction — ask us to fix inaccurate information.
- Right to deletion — delete your account at any time from Settings → Account → Delete Account inside the app, or by emailing [email protected].
- Right to portability — receive your data in a machine-readable format.
- Right to opt out of sale or sharing — we do not sell or share your personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising.
- Right to limit use of Sensitive Personal Information — California users may request that we limit our use of precise geolocation. Email [email protected] to make this request.
- Right to non-discrimination — we will not discriminate against you for exercising your privacy rights.
How to exercise your rights
Email [email protected] with the request and the email address associated with your account. We will verify your identity (typically by sending a confirmation to that email address, or by requiring you to be signed into the app) before fulfilling the request, to protect against fraudulent requests.
We will respond within 45 days for CCPA / US state requests (with one 45-day extension if reasonably necessary, with notice) and within one month for GDPR / UK GDPR requests (with up to a two-month extension for complex requests, with notice).
You may use an authorized agent to submit a request on your behalf where state law allows; we will require written proof of authorization and verification of your identity.
We honor Global Privacy Control (GPC) signals as a valid opt-out of sale and sharing.
EEA / UK Residents
You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority. Where we rely on consent, you may withdraw it at any time without affecting the lawfulness of prior processing.
US State Privacy Rights
Residents of the following states have additional rights under their state privacy laws — including, depending on the state, rights to access, correct, delete, port, opt out of targeted advertising / sale / profiling with significant effects, limit use of sensitive personal information, and appeal a denial of a rights request: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia, Utah, Texas, Oregon, Montana, Florida, Iowa, Delaware, New Jersey, New Hampshire, Kentucky, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Maryland, Indiana, and Minnesota. To exercise any of these rights, email [email protected].
If we deny your privacy-rights request and you live in a state that provides a right to appeal (including Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia, and Texas), you may appeal that decision by replying to our denial email; we will review the appeal and respond within the time required by your state's law.
10. Children's Privacy
The Service is not directed to children under the age of 13 (and not under the higher age of consent in your country, where applicable — see Section 1). If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided us with personal information, please contact us at [email protected] and we will delete the account.
11. International Data Transfers
Skategrounds operates in the United States, and our service providers may process your data in the United States and other countries. If you use the Service from outside the United States, your information will be transferred to and processed in the United States.
For transfers from the EEA, we rely on the EU Standard Contractual Clauses. For transfers from the UK we rely on the UK International Data Transfer Addendum to the EU SCCs. You may request a copy of the safeguards in place by emailing [email protected].
12. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The "Effective Date" at the top of this policy will always reflect the most recent version.
If we make a material change, we will notify you in the app and by email before the change takes effect.
